ABOUT ME

20230728_220517 - Copy.jpg

I have used an extract from a presentation we did in class of each other's  work.

This is by Kim Judson Stuttard @kimstuttardceramics.

Her write up really blew me away - I hope it does you too!

Thora by Kim

What is most apparent in this body of work is the artist genuine engagement with her muse. This love of animals has been the focus throughout her life, from an academic venture into agricultural science to the production of these personality fuelled, exuberant studies. Their intent to raise awareness of the negative impact humanity has on natural habitats, the subjects include big cats, rhinos and orangutangs. International animal rescue offers the data, which inspires an array of processes from collage to expressive ink studies, used to inform the illustrations that decorate these strong simple forms. The simplicity of the vessels perfectly houses the complexity of the surface treatment, offering a canvas that does not distract. The artist’s Icelandic background with its mythical animals certainly resonates. These animals are totems, representations of what could be lost if we don’t actively respond to the ecological issues at hand. This work doesn’t preach but invites you to witness the beauty of these endangered species, gives voice to the vulnerable. The animals central to this work ooze personality, they are quirky but sensitive, the immediate marks, strong sense of pattern and jubilant colours are joyous and playful. We are offered the opportunity to interact with nature in its most pure form, a perfect, uncomplicated, aspirational space, that certainly needs protecting.
