Sgraffito inspiration

The good weather has arrived, just in time for some outside drawing. I used the sketch of Mr Yellow Golden Pheasant to create my first bird sgraffito dish. I am using simple platters, easy to make, so can be regarded as test pieces. Because I need a 'canvass' for my drawings, they are larger than test tiles.

The clay body was Draycott white stoneware and I layered some texture by way of a cloth, when I rolled this out. I like the effect that the texture under the layers of coloured slip produces, so I am incorporating this in my next platters...ideally this would look a bit like animal skin.

For Mr Yellow Golden Pheasant I used a yellow slip underneath with black on top.

I think that the trick with multiple coloured slips and sgraffito, is to catch it at the right moisture level. At present I use all sorts of tools for the sgraffito, I am thinking of upgrading to a professional sgraffito tool.

I then moved on to some African animals drawn at South Lakes Safari Zoo. These are Southern White Rhinos.

I am also very excited to be about to do my first screen printing on clay (next week hopefully). I have had my sketches scanned in and images made in acetate, ready for a couple of screen print frames. For this piece I superimposed an acetate on one of my paper sketches. For this I used my own made up grey slip with green on top.

The rhinos are on a porcelain clay. I've not used porcelain before so I look forward to seeing the results.

I also have a prepared platter with yellow/orange slip with black on top, and hopefully a cheetah like texture underneath! Look forward to carve this next week. This one is in Draycott white stoneware.
